Music Monday with Alex: A Random Encounter

I’ve temporarily brought the original formula of “Me do song cuz it weird or me like” because the eighth track on The Sounds of Weirdness grew into a rabbit hole of local New Jersey radio history and decade’s worth of friendships, personalities, and references to sift through. I was going to take the short road but my feelings kept telling me that that would be a cop-out. So today I will continue to keep that working on the back-burner and tell you about a weird thing that happened to me last week.

I was heading home from a chiropractic appointment (A benefit of small town life is that you can walk pretty much anywhere.) and walking up one of the four main streets that feed into our town’s traffic circle. Each has its share of side roads and back alleys granting access to homes and shops but this street mainly goes through the college campus area and only has one or two actual “town” blocks on it before feeding into the circle, all the rest of the side streets are back alleys and a short one-way section along the railroad tracks. This allows you to circle back really fast along the entire stretch, which will be important in a moment.

So I’m moseying along with the least amount of urgency that one could possibly pull off when an SUV pulls out of the alley in front of me, crosses the road, and enters the opposing alley between a hotel and our local stage theater. In this very brief amount of time a guy had his head out the back window and yells, “Lifeless, to those the definition for what life is! Priceless to you because I put you on the hype shit!” at me, and then they were gone.

I had just stopped and followed them with my head while in a state that I wouldn’t say completely qualifies as confusion since the situation was otherwise completely normal and I got the musical reference that he was making. It was probably the fact that he hadn’t seen me, his head was already out the window before the vehicle had even fully pulled out of the alley; He’d been prepared. I could only conclude that the people in the SUV were driving up behind me, as there hadn’t been any other cars on the road, got the idea to do it, pulled off down the one-way street and then circled in front of me through the alley. The only other option available would be that he just had his head out the window and was going to do that to whoever happened to be out walking, which would have been nobody if I wasn’t there.

So, random dude in the back of that SUV who shouted lyrics at me, this one’s for you.

I ain’t happy, I’m feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I’m useless but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain’t happy, I’m feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I’m useless but not for long
The future is coming on
It’s coming on
It’s coming on
It’s coming on

Yeah, ha-ha
Finally, someone let me out of my cage
Now time for me is nothing ’cause I’m counting no age
Now I couldn’t be there
Now you shouldn’t be scared
I’m good at repairs
And I’m under each snare
Intangible
Bet you didn’t think so I command you to
Panoramic view
Look, I’ll make it all manageable
Pick and choose
Sit and lose
All you different crews
Chicks and dudes
Who you think is really kickin’ tunes?
Picture you gettin’ down in a picture tube
Like you lit the fuse
You think it’s fictional?
Mystical? Maybe
Spiritual
Hero who appears in you to clear your view when you’re too crazy
Lifeless
To those the definition for what life is
Priceless
To you because I put you on the hype shit
You like it?
Gun smokin’ righteous with one toke
You’re psychic among those
Possess you with one go

I ain’t happy, I’m feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I’m useless but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain’t happy, I’m feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I’m useless but not for long
The future (that’s right) is coming on
It’s coming on
It’s coming on
It’s coming on

The essence, the basics
Without, did you make it?
Allow me to make this
Child-like in nature
Rhythm
You have it or you don’t, that’s a fallacy
I’m in them
Every sprouting tree
Every child of peace
Every cloud and sea
You see with your eyes
I see destruction and demise (that’s right)
Corruption in disguise
From this fuckin’ enterprise
Now I’m sucked into your lies
Through Russel, not his muscles but percussion he provides
For me as a guide
Y’all can see me now ’cause you don’t see with your eye
You perceive with your mind
That’s the inner
So I’ma stick around with Russ’ and be a mentor
Bust a few rhymes so motherfuckers remember where the thought is
I brought all this
So you can survive when law is lawless (right here)
Feelings, sensations that you thought was dead
No squealing, remember that it’s all in your head

I ain’t happy, I’m feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I’m useless but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain’t happy, I’m feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I’m useless but not for long
My future is coming on
It’s coming on
It’s coming on
It’s coming on
It’s coming on
My future is coming on
It’s coming on
It’s coming on
It’s coming on
My future is coming on
It’s coming on
It’s coming on
My future
