Music Monday: Wibbly-Wee + Matching with Alex

It’s Monday and I’m having a tough time choosing songs to consider for today’s entry. I can’t decide on a genre, artist, or band so I choose to go with anything that’s just weird. Then it hit me: I knew the perfect place and person to go for music that is bizarre. Back in the early 2000’s when the internet was starting to become a widely recognized “thing”, Flash animation ruled over the early websites. It was a strange and chaotic time in the internet’s evolution when everything was bright, garish, and inhabited by a multitude of Stick Men and moving Clip Images. Within that broth of possibilities, the Crab of Ineffable Wisdom was born.

More commonly known as rathergood.com, the site was created and is run by Joel Veitch, a fellow who could make animations out of seemingly anything. His early works include such things as “Sponge Monkeys”, “Blode”, “Spoon Guard”, and music videos performed by kittens. The Sponge Monkeys were at one point so big that they even appeared in Quiznos commercials. Joel and his team would go on to do many more commercials for several European and American companies in they highly identifiable animation style and have even produced albums and videos as the eclectic ska band, 7 Seconds Of Love.

But perhaps some of the best material that Joel produces are completely original works that have no apparent rhyme or reason to them; he made it and now it exists as a thing without purpose, yet you just hit replay for the ninth time. “Jelly Song” is perhaps one of the best examples of this. I had planned to share it without context and just let you figure it out but after seeing it you’ll understand why I decided that doing so might prove problematic and a little bit mean. Not that I would feel sorry or anything like that.

Music Matching with Alex!

Weekly challenge: find or share a song that you know that either has a matching title, theme, or other details. The more matches, the better! Make them clear, make them oddly specific, or make them obscure, it’s yours! Musicians welcome! To enter, simply either leave a link to your match as a comment with a few words (More words, if you like.) or add a Pingback to your post and I’ll scuttle over to see what you’ve come up with. 😀
