When archiving my strange musical discoveries I use three basic categories to break up the folder: animation, visual worlds, and music videos. Today’s selection is so hallucinogenic that I’d almost call it all three and in fact I had a bit of trouble finding where I’d stored it at first.
Alagoas are a trio from Brooklyn composed of Wilson and Katherine Brown and their collaborator Stuart Bidwell. I happen to think that Bidwell looks the coolest but don’t tell them I said that. They describe their sound as, “…singalong hooks soaring over odd time signatures, intimacies whispered opposite driving drums, and acoustic instruments glittering with electronic atmosphere, Alagoas revels in complicating the simple joy of starry-eyed love.” When you hear them in a moment that will come together and you’ll instantly understand.
“Ghosts”, the song and video that we’ll be looking at today, takes something as familiar to you or I as dancing and spins it into something otherworldly. The story being told deals with one of my favorite tropes in science fiction and features both excellent costume effects work. I hope that you enjoy “Ghosts” as much as I did the first time I watched it.
