Long entry ahead. TL;DR: Fuck yeah, monsters.
Creatures have been dear to me from the very beginning. From watching the menagerie of Ray Harryhausen’s wonders romping around the screen and educational videos filled with battling stop-motion dinosaurs when I was very young, to the echoing thunder of footsteps and roars in Jurassic Park that would pave the way through the new wave of computerized beasts of the 1990’s, and on into the 2000’s and beyond where anything you can dream up can be made flesh on the big screen, I have a love for them and their beastly ways that has been growing non-stop for some thirty-one years; If I could say for certain that I can recall the earliest moments I would give that the full thirty-three.
That being such, I get plenty of creature, monster, beast, fiend, and cryptid suggestions on my video feed, and every now and then these videos also involve music. One such bread crumb led me to Historian Himself, (Whose website, by the way, has the best name ever.) who sums up his channel as, “Monsters, animation, rap and fighting.” If that wasn’t already a selling point, the thumbnail depicted a wizened-looking thing with glowing eyes which appeared to be made of the forest itself lurking within snowy pines. In Mountains (Earth Beasts Awaken, Part 1).
You know that thing where you go into a shop and spot something that you’re immediately sold on, even in such cases where you don’t even know what it is? Yeah, I had that thing.
So I watched the music video. Then I was in the music video. I smelled the cold air and pines mixed with the must of ages untold, felt the stinging air carry a tinge of malignancy from the unknowable glyphs and images etched in blood upon the snowy rocks and trees. Then there’s the being itself. It could fill in for so many figures from so many cultures that it could very well be the primordial thing from which all others sprang. The way it watches over its ancient, dormant charges (Perhaps its brood, even?) seems to point towards that. But nothing sleeps forever and were the old order to return, I wouldn’t give us very good odds.
What the hell, I’ll throw in Part 2 because it’s a badass monster beat-down.
